Key takeaways

  • Canon's 2012 imagePROGRAF iPF range added new software plug-ins to make printing easier.
  • A print plug-in for Digital Photo Professional prints RAW files as 16-bit RGB for smoother gradations.
  • A Gallery Wrap tool in Adobe Photoshop prepares canvas wraps with a choice of edge effects.
  • A Media Configuration Tool lets users fine-tune settings for third-party media, including borderless printing.
  • The iPF range has since been replaced by the imagePROGRAF PRO series.

Update, October 2026: the iPF range has been replaced by Canon’s imagePROGRAF PRO series, such as the imagePROGRAF PRO-2600. See our guide to Canon’s PRO and GP series for the current line-up. The original launch news follows below.

Canon's new imagePROGRAF range will feature several new smart plug-ins to make life easier for users. Here's a Plot It snapshot.

Print Plug-in for Digital Photo Professional

This export module lets users process and print RAW image files directly from Digital Photo Professional (DPP). The plug-in bypasses the operating system’s print driver, so it can process 16-bit RGB images directly. That greatly improves gradations and, as a result, overall image quality.

Features:

  • Full-screen preview
  • More print quality options
  • Paper types grouped by category
  • Roll paper layout view
  • Bi-cubic enlargement

Gallery Wrap

This new creative tool is used through Adobe Photoshop and makes it easy to create gallery wrap prints for framing, with creative options that expand what you can produce.

  • Crop marks: guide lines for folding the paper for mounting.
  • Edge lines: the area outside these lines folds round to the back of the canvas (not displayed or printed).
  • Blue lines: the area inside these lines appears on the front of the canvas when mounted (not printed).
  • Canvas thickness: this area becomes the sides of the canvas when mounted.
  • Amount of extension: extra image printed beyond the edges so no white shows on the sides of the canvas.

You can then choose the effect for the canvas sides:

  • Image: wraps the image round the canvas sides.
  • Soft Image: applies Gaussian filtering to the image on the sides.
  • Reflection: reflects the image on the sides.
  • Soft Reflection: reflects the image on the sides and applies Gaussian filtering.
  • White, black or colour: makes the sides white, black or a custom colour.

Media Configuration Tool

With more and more media available for large-format printers, Canon has developed a Media Configuration Tool to make the new imagePROGRAF models more versatile. As well as Canon-branded media, customers can adjust printer settings to improve precision and print quality on third-party media.

Settings you can adjust include:

  • Media weight and thickness
  • Ink drying
  • Automatic cutting
  • Borderless printing
  • Paper feed amount
  • Print-head height
  • Vacuum strength
  • Maximum ink usage

Plot-It tip: Before printing a gallery wrap, measure the depth of your stretcher bars and set the canvas thickness to match. Reflection or soft reflection edges are the safest choice when the subject runs close to the edge of the frame.

Software matters as much as the printer

For photographers, tools like a 16-bit RAW print path and a proper gallery wrap workflow make more difference day to day than a small jump in print speed. Canon’s focus on software here set the tone for the PRO series that followed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Canon Gallery Wrap plug-in?

A creative tool used through Adobe Photoshop that makes it easy to print canvas gallery wraps for framing. It extends the image so the canvas sides are covered, with guides for folding and mounting.

What edge effects can the Gallery Wrap tool apply?

Image (wraps the image round the sides), Soft Image (the same with Gaussian filtering), Reflection, Soft Reflection, or a plain white, black or custom colour edge.

What does the Print Plug-in for Digital Photo Professional do?

It lets you process and print RAW files straight from Canon’s Digital Photo Professional. By bypassing the operating system’s print driver it handles 16-bit RGB images directly, which gives smoother gradations and better overall image quality.

Can I use third-party media on a Canon imagePROGRAF printer?

Yes. The Media Configuration Tool lets you adjust settings such as media thickness, ink drying, cutting, borderless printing, paper feed, head height, vacuum strength and maximum ink usage to get good results from third-party media as well as Canon-branded media.

Which Canon printers replace the iPF range today?

The iPF range has been replaced by Canon’s imagePROGRAF PRO series for photo and fine art work, such as the 24in PRO-2600. See our guide to Canon’s PRO and GP series for the current line-up.
