HP DesignJet, Canon imagePROGRAF & Epson SureColor Guide
Ultra Low Volume
Starting from the top, our first 4 are currently are what the manufacturers describe as their “ultra low volume” products. These are the lowest priced, sell in volume and are aimed at 1-2 users or occasional printers. The Highly Rated Canon TM-500 plotter takes our No 1 spot with exceptionally strong features, its budget friendly price and low running cost. Followed by the EPSON SC-T2100 for users who want a compact desktop option whilst still gaining a feature rich A1/A2 printer. No 3 the DesignJet T230 offers the strongest green credentials with a low capital investment, and weighing in at less than 30 kilos a light-weight, place anywhere choice.
We base our report on our own unbiased opinions combined with popularity & overall investment cost, however we encourage you to consider the aspects important for you as there is far more to consider than cost.
Mid Volume
For mid volume customers then we’d point you to the Canon TM-510, it’s one of two choices in our No 1 slot, and offers best in class functionality, and running cost. With the HP DesignJet T870 offering industry leading security features, low running cost and convenient print collection.
No 1 –Â Canon imagePROGRAF TM-500 (7448C003AA)
Our Canon TM-500 review – A great value for money multi-purpose A1 printer. New for Q4 2026 Canon have significantly updated their imagePROGRAF TM range, with 4 A1 variants of this robust, and flexible printer. It sits in the ultra low volume category so it’s designed for work groups of 1-2, or very light users who need occasional A1/A2 prints, whether that’s CAD drawings or posters / graphics applications. For larger workgroups, and more heavy volumes then choose the TM-510
We have selected the TM-500, and TM-510 as our number one choices for 2026 / 2027 for multiple reasons. Firstly, both printers ship with much more ink that competitors, the TM-500 with 300ml, and 490ml for the TM-510, this additional ink narrows your capital investment. Secondly, going forward these printers offer reduced running cost with larger inks, the TM-500 an 80ml black matching rivals such as the HP T230, but the CMY inks are 55ml each, a step up from the maximum 29ml on alternatives. The TM-510 offers 130ml, and 300ml inks, its a Plot it team favourite, as these inks offer a best in class cost of print.
Our third reason for our selection is significant, all TM-500 series printers handle longer length rolls, and accept 3-inch cores (optional adapter circa £45 on TM-500, included on TM-510). This media path again delivers best in class performance providing access to 90gsm 594mm x 110m, 80gsm 594mm x 175m, 260gsm Satin / Gloss on 3-inch core along with Polyprop and banner materials, hence our terminology of a “multi-purpose A1 Printer”, the TM series goes beyond a simple A1 Plotter.
Tip: We’ve already said it, the TM-510 should be the choice if you’re likely to print frequently, your ROI will be quickly recouped from the additional out of the box ink, even before your first print is completed. Â
Given both the price point and functionality it is a hugely popular choice for users.
Entry Level: TM-500 1-2 User Work Group | TM-510 3+ Users / heavier volumes

No 2 – Epson SC-T2100 (C11CJ77301)
Our Epson SC-T2100 review – A great value for money plotter, feature rich and it is the lowest priced A1 printer in the market. It offers Light Fast and Water resistant inks in all colours so it’s hardy prints can easily take the wear and tear of busy site work in all weathers. This ink set allows it to step beyond CAD drawings allowing for printing of posters, infographics, site signage and renders for long term display. We don’t suggest it as an everyday graphics printer as there are other choices but it’s great as a CAD A1 A2 printer with occasional graphics or even photos (not on canvas). With strong White and Black Styling it also looks good on a desktop or even on it’s optional stand plus you can add the option of an A3 / A4 sheet feeder at very low cost.
Tip: Purchase with the 3 or preferably 5 year extended warranty, it’s the only printer where the print head is included within the warranty extension, it’s an engineer fit so they’ll come and replace it for you rather than your having to do it.
Given both the price point and functionality it is a hugely popular choice for users.
Entry Level: 1-2 User Work Group

No 3 – HP DesignJet T230 (5HB07D)
Our HP DesignJet T230 review – The 200 series features 2 desktop models, the T250 & the lower priced HP T230, both great choices & hugely popular with users who have previously owned HP. Directly replacing the HP T120 / T125 which held our top position for 5 years running, the T230 comes from a sound platform of printers that have dominated for 25 years.
This model has been a hit since it’s Q4 2020 launch and 2025 it’s refresh has seen the T230 made of over 40% recycled plastic and 5% recycled metal. Packaging is fully fibre-based with a 73% reduction in plastic compared to previous designs, and ink maintenance routines use up to 96% less ink. Additionally, the built-in auto on/off scheduler contributes to energy savings of up to 65%, helping to reduce operational costs and environmental impact. It also now includes HP Wolf Security for protection against unauthorised access and cyber threats.
With a compact design, you can sit the DesignJet T230 on it’s optional stand & basket, a bench, plan chest or even on a suitable sturdy wall shelf & with reliable wi-fi connectivity you need only to worry about the power cable. As with all products the roll feed is standard and takes up to 50 metre A1 / A2 paper rolls but optional extras include a handy cassette tray for either A3 or A4 sheets, you can even finish the look off by adding an optional dust cover to protect your media.
TIP: If you’re buying an extended warranty then opt for the T250 as warranty extensions are at lower cost and therefore its better value + the T250 is 5 seconds quicker per A1, if you’re adding the optional stand or autosheet feeder then choose the T630

No 4 – HP DesignJet T870 (AM0X9A)
Our HP T870 review – The T870 offers multi-purpose printing, not just A1 plotting it can comfortably produce posters in A1 and A2 as well as construction drawings. Not only does it offer print from roll, it also features an inbuilt sheet feeder for A3, or A4 printing and with an optional collection tray can stack smaller sizes once printed rather than ejecting straight to the basket with larger formats, this is unique feature not found elsewhere.
Offering 4 colour pigment inks, UV stability, and water resistance is easily achieved, where as the T230 / T630 line up provides CMY dye ink, which is unable to deliver this longevity or robustness. With 300ml, or 130ml ink choices, the T870 offers a lower cost per print than other HP T Series models.
With a top speed of 21 seconds per A1, and a very user friendly print driver in HP class leading “HP Click” it packs a lot of punch in a small package!
Tip: T870 is limited to 50m Bond Plotter Paper rolls, or 30m for graphics papers, a better choice can be found in the HP Z6, or Canon TM-510 if this is important to you. Finally, Borderless printing is not offered, for poster prints then consider the Canon options.Â

No 6 –Â Epson SureColor SC-T3405 (C11CJ55301A1)
Our Epson SC-T3405 Review – Difficult for us to place as its not hugely popular in the market and doesn’t fair as well in sell out data as others, however its reached a high-position for us as it really does tick a lot of our boxes, especially when it comes to value for money. The availability of 110, 350, and even 700ml ink cartridges makes it completely unique to contemporises, with a cost per ML from as little as 29p.
Offering pigment ink with UV (lightfast) stability, and water resistance its great form onsite CAD drawings, Architectural renders and Posters, it even prints borderless reducing trimming, and manual labour.
Capable of handling longer length rolls its ideal for busy design, and construction teams.
Tip: Comes with an Epson 2 year warranty, this also covers the printhead which is an engineer fit only, we recommend the purchase of an Epson 5 year warranty which provides onsite parts, labour and printhead cover for the full term. We also suggest using the Plot it installation service, as it is a bulky unit. Finally, ignore the “N” model, its best purchased with the stand.Â

No 7 – HP DesignJet T830 Multifunctional A1 Printer (F9A28D)
Our HP DesignJet T830 24″ MFP review – Absolutely Brilliant multi-functional unit for those who wish to not only print construction drawings but to copy & scan as well.
This all-in-one compact plotter offers roll & a sheet feed tray for A3 or A4. Ideal for those small volume users who need a bit more flexibility and who want the benefit of bigger more economical inks as the T830 supports 130ml and even 300ml.
By far the most popular A1 MFP on the market but even if you’re only plotting – bigger inks, inbuilt HDD and HP Click Printing Software make the HP DesignJet T830 an excellent choice, it’s exceptionally robust and comes with a decent software suite.

No 8 – Canon imagePROGRAF TC-21 (7055C003AA)
Our Canon imagePROGRAF TC-21 review – we love that this SHIPS WITH £199 of FREE INK & is the first entry level A1 / A2 printer using bottled ink refills. It’s Canon’s reaction to the changing landscape at this end of the market reducing their entry level price point with this interesting portfolio addition. Utilising 70ML bottles rather than chip coded cartridges, the bottles can go in normal plastic recycling bins without issue.
In addition to the roll feed, the A3 / A4 paper tray is included as standard and is not an option, as with other brands.
TC-21 Print quality is great whether you’re printing CAD drawings or Posters with all the benefits of Light Fast Water resistant ink. Options include a stand + basket if you’d like it freestanding or a clip to desk basket, ideal for bench / plan chest mounting and an industry first.
Tip: What we don’t like – Unlike all other imagePROGRAF printers the TC-21 is limited to 50m rolls for bond paper, and 30m for coated, and in both instances these are 2-inch core only. The TM-500, and TM-510 are much more flexible and are our preference.Â

No 9 –Â HP DesignJet T630 & T650 (5HB09D | 5HB08D)
Our HP DesignJet T630 review – Definitely one not to be ignored! You can be forgiven for thinking the T630 & T650 looks like the T200 product and even the STUDIO printer – it is 100% based on the same platform.
With a 2025 refresh and also offering the same updates and Green Credentials as the T230, the T600 series comes with the stand straight out of the box rather than being an option. With extra memory & quicker processing, it can support more than just a couple of users and while it is still aimed at low volume environments, it does offer users a quick plotting process. The T650, unlike the T630, is fully loaded with stand, sheet tray & roll dust cover. It also comes with 2 year warranty so it’s our preferred option (if you’re not considering an HP STUDIO)
With HP’s easy to use bundled software HP CLICK, you can print on the go and easily from the desktop, submitting a range of files types including PDF, for MAC & windows users this offers a driverless print scenario.
It should be noted that unlike the T230 & T250, the T600 Series are available in both A1 or A0 variants.

No 10 – EPSON SC-T3700 (C11CH79301A1)
Our EPSON SC-T3700 review – What a printer this is, its the only high volume option in our line up, as such it lacks the popularity of others, but for heavy volume users its a must for consideration.
EPSON shook the market up with a departure from their old architecture with a completely new chic design that is not only attractive but also robust and functional. It’s designed to back up close to a wall with everything accessible from the front and designed for productivity.
The 3700 features ink choices of 700ml, 350ml & 160ml so the cost per page can be kept down. It can also take 175m 3″ core paper, again underlying it’s robust nature. In addition from the standard Black and CMY ink you expect to see, there is also a red ink – this is a great addition for renders, logo’s and for posters, increasing colour gamut and brilliant of you ever need solid red fill such as sale posters or construction site signage.
The machine is available in 3 versions – single roll, dual roll and dual roll with postscript
Tip:Â Buy with the EPSON COVERPLUS warranty, it’s the only warranty which not only includes print heads but also sends an engineer to fit for you and is great value over 5 years

Ink pricing is based on the best value ink cartridges for each model such as lower cost per ml High capacity units or multi-packs, for example the HP Studio and T230 product are priced on XL 80ml Black single pack and the popular value for money single colour 3 cartridge multi-packs. Some machines are more ink efficient than others so it is not always the case that a like for like comparison of cost per ml is a fair representation of running cost, however pricing is published as a guide to what you can expect to pay for a cartridge.Â
We have based our results on both the popularity of products purchased by our customers, size of market from manufacturers own data as well as our individual opinion.
