Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta 315gsm 64″ 1626mm x 12m 10643199

A museum-quality, OBA-free cotton paper designed for photographers and artists who want the richness of traditional darkroom baryta, combined with the precision of modern inkjet printing.

Made from 100% cotton, this natural white glossy paper contains no optical brightening agents (OBA free), giving it a warm, authentic tone and exceptional long-term stability.

The paper features an exquisite, delicately textured surface paired with a high-gloss baryta inkjet coating, delivering:

  • Outstanding colour reproduction
  • Deep, velvety blacks
  • Beautiful contrast
  • Superb detail retention

Thanks to the barium sulphate layer, Photo Rag® Baryta offers the look and feel of traditional analogue baryta darkroom papers, but without glare.

The result is a fine art print with a refined sheen and striking depth, ideal for exhibition work, portfolios, and archival printing.

Fully compatible with Canon PRO and Epson SureColor photo printers, ICC profiling ensures accurate and predictable colour from screen to print.

  • Consistent results when using ICC profiles

The baryta layer enhances density and tonal depth, making this paper especially popular for:

  • Gallery sales
  • Archival portfolios

Choose Hahnemühle Photo Rag® Baryta 315gsm for timeless, exhibition-ready prints with stunning depth and lasting stability.

Print with confidence using ICC profiles on your Canon PRO or Epson SureColor printer.

What are OBAs and why does OBA-free matter?

Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs) are chemical compounds added to paper to increase perceived whiteness. They work by absorbing ultraviolet light and re-emitting it in the blue spectrum, “tricking” the eye into seeing a brighter, cooler white.

While OBAs provide an initial “pop,” they are subject to fluorescence quenching, meaning they will degrade over time. As these chemicals break down, the paper can lose its brightness and return to its natural yellowish tone, which will affect the colour balance of your print.

Hahnemühle Photo Baryta is a premium OBA-free paper, meaning it contains no artificial whiteners. Instead, it relies on high-purity base materials and the natural reflectance of the baryta coating.

Benefits of OBA-free papers:
  • Maximum Archival Stability: Without chemicals to degrade, the paper base remains stable for centuries.
  • Natural Tonal Range: Provides a sophisticated, warm-white base that complements skin tones and classic black-and-white photography.
  • Consistency: Your prints will look the same under different lighting conditions and won’t “yellow” as chemicals fade.
  • Museum Standard: Preferred by galleries and collectors who prioritize permanence and long-term investment value.

What is a Baryta Coating?

Baryta coating is a specialized layer of barium sulphate applied to premium inkjet and darkroom papers to produce a smooth, satin-gloss finish with exceptional image contrast, sharpness, and deep black density (D-Max). Designed to mimic classic fibre-based prints, this archival coating enhances image brightness and acts as a protective barrier, preventing chemical impurities within the paper fibres from migrating into the image layers.

Is Baryta paper archival?

Yes, Baryta paper is considered the gold standard for archival photo printing. Because the barium sulphate layer is chemically inert and pH-neutral, it prevents the paper base from yellowing over time. This coating ensures a long-lasting print that resists environmental degradation, making it the preferred choice for museum-grade displays and fine art photography that requires a lifespan of 100+ years. Photo Rag Baryta is acid and lignin free, offering museum-grade longevity, and conforms to ISO9706

What is the difference between Alpha-Cellulose and Cotton Rag paper bases?

The primary difference lies in the source material: alpha-cellulose is made from high-grade, purified wood pulp, while cotton rag is made from 100% cotton linters. Cotton rag is often considered the “gold standard” for museum-grade prints due to its natural strength, soft tactile feel, and inherent archival stability. Alpha-cellulose papers are a more cost-effective alternative; they are chemically refined to remove lignin and acid, providing a similarly high-quality, archival surface that is generally sturdier and smoother, making it ideal for high-volume portfolios and modern photography.

What are cotton linters and why are they used in paper?

Cotton linters are the short, high-purity cellulose fibres that remain on the cotton seed after the initial harvest. Although they are a byproduct of the textile industry, they are a primary raw material for our archival-grade papers. These fibres are naturally free of both lignin and acid, which prevents paper from yellowing or becoming brittle over time. When processed into a pulp, linters create a dense, uniform, and exceptionally durable base that provides the soft, “luxurious” feel characteristic of  high-end fine art and photography papers.
