Smooth Matt 100% Cotton Paper for Professional Photo & Giclée Printing

Hahnemühle Photo Rag 188gsm is one of the most widely used fine art inkjet papers in the world, offering the same renowned velvety matt surface as Photo Rag 308gsm in a lighter, more flexible weight.

Made from 100% cotton, this archival-quality paper is ideal for photographers, artists and print studios producing high-quality photographic prints, portfolios and exhibition work.

Optimised for use with leading professional inkjet printers such as Canon PRO series and Epson SureColor photo printers.

Smooth Matt Surface for Outstanding Detail

Photo Rag 188gsm features a refined smooth texture that allows exceptional image sharpness, subtle tonal gradation and natural colour reproduction.

The natural white base enhances contrast while preserving delicate highlights and shadow detail, making it particularly suited to both colour and black and white photography.

Professional Print Performance

The premium matt inkjet coating delivers:

  • Wide colour gamut
  • Deep blacks
  • Smooth tonal transitions
  • Precise detail reproduction
  • Consistent ink absorption

Compatible with pigment and dye-based ink systems, Photo Rag 188gsm performs reliably across professional photo printers such as:

  • Canon PRO Series
  • Epson SureColor Photo Printers

Archival Quality

  • Weight: 188gsm
  • Material: 100% cotton
  • Acid and lignin free
  • Calcium carbonate buffered
  • Very low OBA content
  • ISO 9706 conform / museum quality for highest age resistance

When paired with pigment inks, Photo Rag 188gsm provides excellent longevity and image stability suitable for gallery display and limited edition work.

Ideal For

  • Photographic prints
  • Portfolio and presentation work
  • Exhibition prints
  • Fine art and giclée reproduction
  • Albums and display prints
  • Lower cost alternative to 308gsm

Its lighter weight also makes it ideal for book projects, matted prints and mounting applications.

ICC Profiles Available

Hahnemühle provides ICC output profiles to accurately characterise the colour gamut for specific combinations of printer, ink and paper.

Using colour management ensures a predictable transition from your monitor colour space, such as AdobeRGB, to the printable gamut of your Canon PRO or Epson SureColor printer.

Supplied RGB profiles are ready for direct use with your print driver and graphic application, with no RIP software required. All profiles are verified through test prints to ensure consistent, professional results.

Why Choose Hahnemühle Photo Rag 188gsm?

Photo Rag 188gsm offers the same trusted surface quality as its heavyweight counterpart in a lighter, more flexible format. It is the perfect choice for photographers and artists seeking museum-quality output with ease of handling and mounting.

Manufactured in Germany, Hahnemühle continues over 400 years of papermaking heritage, delivering trusted performance recognised worldwide.

If you’re new to fine art and photo printing, you’ll quickly come across a lot of unfamiliar acronyms. One of the most common is OBA, and understanding it can really help when choosing the right paper for your work.

Hahnemühle Photo Rag 188 is classed as a low OBA paper.

What are OBAs?

OBA stands for Optical Brightening Agents.

These are chemicals sometimes added during paper production to make the surface appear brighter and whiter by reflecting blue light.

What does Low OBA mean?

When a paper is described as low OBA, it means:

  • It contains very few artificial brighteners
  • The whiteness comes primarily from the natural paper base
  • Colours appear more stable and consistent over time

Benefits for photographers & artists include:

  • Improved archival quality
  • Reduced risk of yellowing
  • More natural-looking whites
  • Greater consistency when using ICC profiles

In short, low OBA papers are designed for longevity and colour accuracy rather than artificial brightness.

What about OBA-free papers?

Some fine art papers contain no OBAs at all.

These are often found in traditional-style baryta papers, where the natural tone of the paper is preferred over a brightened white.

OBA-free papers:

  • Rely entirely on the base material for their colour
  • Tend to have a slightly warmer, more natural white
  • Offer maximum archival stability
  • Provide highly consistent long-term display performance

They’re often chosen for museum-quality printing, exhibition work, and applications where permanence is the highest priority.

Put simply:
Low OBA = enhanced longevity
OBA-free = maximum archival stability
