What are OBAs and why does OBA-free matter?

Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs) are chemical compounds added to paper to increase perceived whiteness. They work by absorbing ultraviolet light and re-emitting it in the blue spectrum, “tricking” the eye into seeing a brighter, cooler white.

While OBAs provide an initial “pop,” they are subject to fluorescence quenching, meaning they will degrade over time. As these chemicals break down, the paper can lose its brightness and return to its natural yellowish tone, which will affect the colour balance of your print.

What is a Baryta Coating?

Baryta coating is a specialized layer of barium sulphate applied to premium inkjet and darkroom papers to produce a smooth, satin-gloss finish with exceptional image contrast, sharpness, and deep black density (D-Max). Designed to mimic classic fibre-based prints, this archival coating enhances image brightness and acts as a protective barrier, preventing chemical impurities within the paper fibres from migrating into the image layers.

Is Baryta paper archival?

Yes, Baryta paper is considered the gold standard for archival photo printing. Because the barium sulphate layer is chemically inert and pH-neutral, it prevents the paper base from yellowing over time. This coating ensures a long-lasting print that resists environmental degradation, making it the preferred choice for museum-grade displays and fine art photography that requires a lifespan of 100+ years. What is the difference between Alpha-Cellulose and Cotton Rag paper bases?

What are cotton linters and why are they used in paper?

Cotton linters are the short, high-purity cellulose fibres that remain on the cotton seed after the initial harvest. These fibres are naturally free of both lignin and acid, which prevents paper from yellowing or becoming brittle over time.
