Paper and Media Guide for TM-600 Series Printers
Choosing the right roll paper can seem complicated, particularly when you are faced with different widths, weights, finishes, core sizes, and roll lengths.
The simplest approach is to start with **what you are printing**, then choose the appropriate width and media type.
Choosing the right paper width
The TM-600 Series accepts rolls up to 36 inches / 914mm wide.
For CAD drawings and technical plans, 841mm is the most useful A0 width. It allows you to print A0 drawings in portrait and A1 drawings in landscape, making it a versatile choice for general CAD work.
Other common widths include:
- 841mm – A0 portrait and A1 landscape
- 594mm – A1 portrait and A2 landscape
- 420mm – A2 portrait and A3 landscape
- 914mm / 36-inch – A0 and wider graphics
- 610mm / 24-inch – A1 and A2 graphics and posters
Wider 36-inch media is particularly useful for posters, display graphics, presentation work and other applications where the additional print width is valuable.
Roll diameter and core size
The Canon imagePROGRAF TM Series can accommodate rolls with a maximum diameter of 140mm, providing useful media capacity for an A0 printer.
The range supports both 2-inch and 3-inch core media, although the required 3-inch adapters depend on the printer model.
The TM-600 requires optional 3-inch core adapters, while the TM-610, TM-610M, and TM-615 include them as standard.
Choosing the right roll length
One of the advantages of the TM Series is its ability to accommodate longer rolls than many entry-level large-format printers.
The most suitable roll length depends on the media type, weight, core size and maximum roll diameter.
CAD and technical drawings
For everyday CAD plots and technical drawings, typical choices include:
- 80gsm / 90gsm / 100gsm CAD paper
- 45m rolls
- 50m rolls
- 91m rolls
- 110m rolls
- 38m (Drafting Film)
For organisations printing plans regularly, longer rolls can reduce the number of media changes and help keep workflows moving.
Plans and onsite drawings
For general plans and high-volume technical documents, 75gsm and 80gsm Bond paper can provide an economical option.
Suitable 3-inch core media can be available in lengths of up to 175 metres, making it particularly useful for users who want to minimise roll changes.
Graphics and display work
For posters, presentations and display graphics, coated matte papers are available in a range of weights, typically from 120gsm to 230gsm.
Depending on the media, common roll lengths include:
- 30m
- 45m
- 60m
- Up to 90m on some 100 / 120 / 140gsm media
These papers provide a step up from standard CAD Bond when you need stronger colour reproduction and a more professional presentation.
Posters, renders and presentation graphics
For higher-quality posters, renders and presentation work, heavier media from around 190gsm to 300gsm can provide a more substantial finished product.
Typical roll lengths include:
- 15m
- 30m
- 60m
The most suitable choice will depend on the required finish, print quality and how the finished print will be displayed.
Vinyl and polypropylene
The TM Series can also be used with selected self-adhesive vinyl and polypropylene media.
Typical roll lengths are around 12m to 30m, although some products offer longer options.
These materials can be useful for signage, display graphics, promotional work and other applications where a more durable or specialist substrate is required.
Which Paper Should I Choose?
If you are unsure which media is right for your printer or application, start with the type of work you produce:
CAD drawings and technical plans:
Choose a lightweight CAD paper, typically 90gsm to 100gsm.
A0 / A1 site plans and draft plots:
841mm Bond or CAD paper provides an efficient all-round solution, typically 75gsm to 80gsm
Posters and presentation graphics:
Choose a coated matte media for stronger colour and a more professional finish. 120gsm to 180gsm are ideal.
Photo-quality output and renders:
Consider a heavier coated photographic media matched to the required image quality. 190gsm and 260gsm are the most popular.
Signage and display graphics:
Vinyl, polypropylene, or heavier coated media may be more appropriate depending on the application.
