Help on deciding which Hahnemühle paper is best for you
For professional photography, Hahnemühle Baryta papers and Hahnemühle Photo Rag are two of the most popular choices. Baryta papers are ideal when you want deep blacks, strong contrast and the feel of a traditional darkroom print, while Photo Rag is often chosen for softer tonal transitions and exhibition-quality fine art photography. For a premium finish, heavier weights of 300gsm and above are often preferred.
Hahnemühle Photo Rag is a 100% cotton, acid-free fine art paper designed for archival printing. It is popular because its smooth matte surface, soft texture and excellent colour reproduction make it a leading choice for giclée printing, fine art reproductions and museum-quality photographic prints.
Giclée printing is a professional inkjet printing process used to produce museum-quality fine art and photographic prints. The term is commonly used within galleries, print studios and museums to describe prints made using archival pigment inks and high-quality cotton or alpha cellulose papers.
Papers such as Hahnemühle Photo Rag® are widely used for giclée printing because their 100% cotton base and specialist inkjet coatings allow for exceptional colour depth, smooth tonal transitions and long-term archival stability.
When combined with professional printers such as Epson SureColor P-Series or Canon imagePROGRAF PRO Series, giclée printing enables artists, photographers and print studios to produce gallery-quality reproductions, limited edition prints and exhibition photography with outstanding detail and colour accuracy.
The use of archival materials ensures that properly produced giclée prints can maintain their quality for decades, making them the preferred choice for fine art reproduction, professional photography and museum-grade printing.
OBA-free means the paper does not contain Optical Brightening Agents. These additives can make paper appear brighter white at first, but they may fade over time. OBA-free Hahnemühle papers, such as Bamboo and Museum Etching, use more natural tones to support long-term archival stability and colour consistency.
Resin-coated paper has a sealed surface that gives it a smoother photographic feel, with faster drying times and greater water resistance. Matte paper has a non-reflective finish that reduces glare, making it a strong choice for framed artwork, fine art prints and applications where surface texture is important.
Yes. ICC Profiles are essential for colour accuracy. They tell your printer exactly how much ink to lay down for a specific paper type. Using the correct profile ensures your screen match the print, prevents ink pooling, and saves money by reducing wasted media. The Hahnemühle Download centre offers direct access to professionally created ICC Profiles.
Hahnemühle’s Natural Line (Agave, Hemp, Rice paper and Bamboo) uses fast-growing, highly renewable plant fibres that require significantly less water and no pesticides to produce. These eco-friendly papers are from fast growing plant material, acid-free, highly durable, and provide a unique tactile surface for artists seeking a sustainable, archival alternative to traditional wood-pulp or cotton media.
The Epson SureColor SC-P Series and Canon imagePROGRAF PRO Series are the industry leaders for Hahnemühle media. Both ranges utilise pigment-based ink systems (such as UltraChrome PRO12 or LUCIA PRO), which are essential for achieving the archival longevity, deep blacks, and precise colour graduation required for museum-grade printing.
While some papers work with standard inkjets, professional Fine Art and Photo Rag media require pigment inks for true archival stability. Dye-based office printers may not bond correctly with the specialised coatings, leading to reduced colour accuracy and potential fading over time.
